I’ve been to Walt Disney World more times than I can count. And each time I go, I learn something new. Making mistakes along the way and gathering new tips for you. That’s my job!
When a friend or family member who hasn’t been to Disney joins us they are amazed at how much I know. But while they’re singing my praises, I’m kicking myself and saying, “We should have made earlier reservations” or “That was a useless FastPass.”
I’ve made my fair share of mistakes. I may not always know as much as you think I know. But I’ve learned plenty!
And I’m happy to share it with you!
Start the day early
As long as you are not a group of night owls, getting up early on your Disney vacation is one of the best moves you can do. We aim to get to the parks at least 30 minutes before the scheduled opening. You can get SO much done in the first 2 hours.
The FastPass Dilemma
There are a scant few attractions that are worth getting FastPasses. Click here for a list of your best bets.
Where To Stay
As long as it’s in the budget, staying on property is the way to go. Every time we’ve stayed off property we’ve regretted it. Sure, we may have saved a few bucks but there is no direct transportation to each park (we have to drive ourselves), we can’t take advantage of Extra Magic Hours (early or late hours reserved for resort guests only) and we aren’t immersed in the magic. Staying on property is our favorite way to vacation at Disney.
What About Extra Magic Hours?
Speaking of Extra Magic Hours, there are lots of theories on how to take advantage of them. Our favorite Extra Magic Hour is in the morning. Evening Extra Magic Hours are great on our last night if it happens to coincide. Before your trip, consult the schedule and plan accordingly. It’s a great time saver and allows you to get the most out of each day.
When You’re Bringing The Whole Crew
Many people choose Walt Disney World to celebrate large family gatherings. And when you’re traveling with groups larger than 8, things can get tricky. Planning is the key. Allow for together time and alone time. Consider a “team uniform.” For more tips, click here.
To Stroller Or Not To Stroller?
Our family averages 20,000 steps a day when we visit Walt Disney World. Skipping the stroller for our kids is one of the 10 Ten of Disney Mistakes we’ve ever made. If members of your party are toddlers, Disney strollers are the bomb! They are so easy to maneuver. Purchased for a “length of stay” you simply show your receipt (or Magicband) and it’s easy in, easy out at each stroller location. My kids thought they were too big for strollers until about noon each day and then they were begging to ride.
Know Your Limits
Don’t push your family to their breaking point. My husband and daughter can dance ’til dawn. My sons and I are up at first light. You know your family best. If you have a group of night owls, don’t try to turn them into early birds every morning of the trip. Schedule a sleep-in day or two. Take a break in the middle of the day when the crowds get heavy. Your group will thank you. Trust me on this.
Plan, Plan, Be Flexible and Plan Some More
Plan, plan and plan some more. And then? Be flexible. Plans are just a guideline. They can save a vacation and they can hinder a vacation if you refuse to adjust to the inevitable snafu. Plans (Advanced Dining Reservations) will make sure that everyone has at least one relaxing meal in their belly. Double-checking the park hours will save headaches in the morning when you arrive and discover the park hours changed and actually opened one hour earlier. And now the crowds are horrendous. (Been there, done that.)
Don’t Leave Without The My Disney Experience App
Download and use the My Disney Experience App. This app will keep track of every reservation: resort, dining, and Fastpasses, keeping scheduling mistakes to a minimum. You can check park hours, parade times and showtimes. You can even check out wait times. There are maps and menus. Locations to find your favorite characters. It truly is magic at your fingertips.
And Finally, Slow Down
Take time to smell the roses. Shows, parades and sideshows are all part of the experience. Sure, the rides are fun but the sites and shows give you an opportunity to relax and recharge.
