I follow a number of Disney sites, pages, fans. Reading their accounts this morning of what 9/11 was like at Walt Disney World and Disneyland is sobering.
When they closed the parks, with no explanation to the guests other than “circumstances beyond our control,” guests were ushered out of the parks. Guests were confused and angry. But as news of what was going on beyond Disney’s magical bubble, panic and fear set it.
And in true Disney fashion they took care of, entertained and calmed all of the guests now stranded in their resorts.
I am reminded this day of the famous Mister Roger’s advice to “look for the helpers” in times of tragedy. We all became helpers that day as we comforted our children, friends and neighbors. Donated blood. Drove miles to the sites to help with the volunteer efforts. Gave blankets, food. Cheered the first responders with signs of encouragement along their route.
We were all changed that day.
A Flag Retreat ceremony is held on Main Street in Magic Kingdom to honor today, Patriots Day. May we always remember the people we became after 9/11.
May we never forget.
