When I was a kid, I was enamored with the characters at Walt Disney World. I drove my parents crazy, wanting to fill up my autograph book with as many autographs as possible.
My daughter? She couldn’t care less. Much to my chagrin.
And then my boys arrived. Oooooo! I could just squeeze their cute little cheeks.
They LOVED autographs!
And through them, I learned, all over again, the best tips and tricks.
Chubby Pens. Most characters have gloved hands. So, the bigger the pen, the better. Giant Sharpies work best. Colored Sharpies? Even better!
Not into autograph books? Get creative. My son had a Donald Duck backpack. Donald signed it and he was in heaven. Later, during the trip, a Cast Member noticed the string had broken and we had tried to fix it. He offered to replace it and we said, “Sorry. But thanks. It has a very important signature on it.” He told us to come back in an hour. Waiting for us an hour later was a brand new backpack with Donald’s signature. Disney magic! Other favorite items to sign include: hats, picture frame and mats, shirts (characters can not sign them if you’re wearing them), Christmas ornaments and Disney character books. But do what speaks to you!
Bring a birthday card or a postcard. There’s nothing better than coming home from your vacation and finding a little Disney in the mailbox. Or surprising your child with a card from her favorite character.
Ask Questions. Not only are you getting the autograph, but you’re getting priceless face time with each character. Make every minute count. Engage. Connect. My sons were often star struck. But one small question often turned into magical moments. Once the character responded, giggles and mayhem ensued. Ah, memories.
Dine with the stars. Some of our best interaction time (and most relaxing for the parents) is at a character meal. NO waiting in lines. And you have to eat anyway. It’s a win-win!
Can’t wait? Write your favorite character and get mail in return:

Early in the day and head of the line is best. You’ll be at your best. Your child with be at his best. And the characters are fresh and energetic and eager to greet their biggest fan.
